Introducing the NEW Tom Crean Ultra - Saturday, March 10th 2018

A new ultra event in Co. Kerry, this is to commemorate the first Irish ultra marathoner, Tom Crean (1877-1938). Tom, on several expeditions to the Antarctic, trekked across that inhospitable terrain to save the lives of his compatriots.

The proposed route (48km approx) will be from Dingle, taking in some of Brandon mountain, along parts of the Dingle Way, and finishing in The South Pole Inn in Annascaul. Registration will be in Annascaul on Saturday morning at 6am, a coach will transfer all entrants to Dingle for an 8am Start. It will be an orienteering type event, no support allowed (totally self sufficient), so no crew stops. There will be emergency water provided by The Tom Crean Ultra Committee. Navigation skills will be essential! All excess funds will go towards Kerry Down Syndrome. The event will be run along the same lines as The Kerry Way Ultra and UltraLite, live-tracked, insured, no prize money but locally sourced prizes, tees, etc.

This event will also be a No Trace Race with the usual principles applied.

There will be a Mandatory Gear Check at Registration and spot checks along the route. Gear needed is: Waterproof Jacket and Trousers, hat and gloves, fully charged mobile phone, OSI Map No. 70, spare food and water, changes of shoes (route is a mixture of tarred roads, green trails and boggy mountain tracks), survival bag, first aid kit, three biscuits and two bars of chocolate (the only food Crean had for a 56k trek to save Lieut. Evans in 1912!). The Gear Check will be before Registration and you will not be let register if you do not have ALL of the above, and there is no sharing of gear!!!

This event is only possible due to the involvement of the local landowners, the Annascaul and Dingle communities and, of course, the Crean family.

Cost €105, registration opens on Dec 20 2017 and closes Feb 28 2018.

As usual, contact Eileen on 087 273 1489 if you need details, information or encouragement. There are B&Bs etc. in the Annascaul area.
