June 19th 2021
This year sees the chance for endurance runners to take on a brand new challenge set amongst the beautiful scenery of the Reeks District in Kerry. The Killorglin 12 to 12 Endurance Run is a rare opportunity for runners to take part in a 12-hour race in Ireland (six-hour and relay options also available) on what will be the longest race day in the calendar thanks to it being held on the nearest Saturday to the Summer Solstice.
Taking place on an 8km loop on the tarred paths and roads around Sunhill which sits between Castlemaine Harbour and Ireland’s highest peak Carrauntoohil, runners will need to complete as many laps as possible in the 12-hour allocated race time between midday and midnight on June 19.
A new take on old rituals
The Reeks District is steeped in ancient Irish myths and legends and the race is redolent of age old rounding rituals, a key part of religious pilgrimages where believers would pray while walking sunwise around the features of a mountain, a practice thought to unburden stress, ego, worries, negative thoughts and negative energies. To mirror this, the race will follow the direction of the sun as it travels around the route.
Starting at midday (12h and Relay) or 6pm (6h), the aim of runners is to complete as many kilometers as possible in the allocated time. This race is a test of fitness, mental toughness, endurance and speed, as well as the opportunity to challenge yourself beyond a marathon distance.
Full laps only will count to runners’ race totals with everyone finishing at midnight, no matter where they are on the course, ie. if a runner has completed eight loops by 11.45pm, this will be their finishing distance. Runners will only be allowed to start a final lap if they are 100% confident they can complete it before the race ends at midnight.
12 hour runners will have the hours of 12 midday – 12 midnight to run as many loops as they can. No new laps will be allowed to start after 11.30pm and partial loops will not be counted. Runners must complete their final loop by 11.59pm for it to be counted.
6 hour runners will have the hours of 6pm – 12 midnight to run as many loops as they can. No new laps will be allowed to start after 11.30pm and partial loops will not be counted. Runners must complete their final loop by 11.59pm for it to be counted.
12 hour Relay teams of up to four people will run the loop in a relay-style, with a maximum of 1 runner on the course at any one time. No new laps will be allowed to start after 11.30pm and partial loops will not be counted. Runners must complete their final loop by 11.59pm for it to be counted. Last lap exception: Teams are allowed to run their last lap all together but only the last lap and this isn’t mandatory.
